On the surface this looks like a fantastic intervention– giving every kindergarten student 50 to 100 dollars, what could be wrong with that?! And yet, there’s something discomfiting about the plan, which seems like it packs a lot more flash and headline appeal than anything substantial. I’m all for redistributive justice. But shifting material wealth around shouldn’t be the only thing we see happening when children attend school. What does giving a 5-year old 50 (or 100) bucks teach her about herself, her individual capabilities, her uniqueness, her strength other than to defer all of those powerful attributes she possesses in favor of a cash payoff down the line.
