Media Decoder | Web Sites to Go Dark – Video Library – The New York Times.

This certainly caught my attention yesterday around 9:30pm Pacific Time, when I tried to look something up (who knows what it was– I don’t remember anymore!) and my go-to source of info was unavailable *gasp*  I’ll be honest, I was annoyed.  At first I thought Wikipedia was just asking me for money AGAIN.  But then I read on…

Like the wonks in this video suggest, I too think of Wikipedia and other sites like it as sort of a public utility– the name of it’s parent company, Wikimedia Commons, is pretty accurate.  What SOPA and PIPA seem to represent are a sort of “primitive accumulation” of the wealth of the Internet.  This will definitely be an interesting story to follow.

Finally, you can really see the reach of American politics globally when these type policy possibilities cause website with international, multilingual trans-cultural reach to shut down in protest.
